Surface Water Drainage Engineer – Permanent

Salary: £28k – £35k

Hours: 9:00am to 5.30pm

Location: Haywards Heath (minimum of 2 days per week in the office, COVID restrictions permitting)

Their team of experts deliver Flood Risk and Drainage solutions, they provide solutions to Industrial, Retail, Residential, Commercial Developments and Public schemes throughout the UK

About the Role

You will become a key part of the existing consulting team. The successful candidate will sit alongside their Principal Engineer. You will have an enthusiasm to develop your career in the water sector, whilst also sharing your experiences with their more junior staff. This is a senior opportunity and they are looking for someone who wants to progress their career, have more responsibility and demonstrate their full capabilities.  

You will be confident liaising with clients and building relationships with their current client base. Your knowledge and expertise of the sector will be required to support junior staff and their clients to make informed decisions on how best to mitigate flood related constraints.

They are looking for someone that is wanting to grow their career or in the final stages of becoming chartered and now start to be independent in their working with junior staff available to support you deliver projects.

They are a fast-paced consultancy, so they expect you to be able to accommodate their way of working. This means you will be well-organised, motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible to benefit the company and you. The right candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team.

It is essential you can communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with colleagues and clients alike.  They encourage dialogue within the team and see it as a positive that senior consultants through to graduates are all integrated within the same work space. 

Client care is important to them as a business and they encourage regular communication with their clients so that they are involved in the project process and potential implications of what they are seeking to achieve.  You will need to be comfortable in managing projects and liaising with the client to support them in achieving their end goal.

Where required, their team know when to involve other specialists within the team to support a project. Their team can provide overland flow models, river modelling, flood risk assessments and direct rainfall modelling.  

Experience / Requirements

  • Surface Water Management Plans,
  • Surface Water Drainage Strategy (Outline and Full Planning)
  • Detailed Drainage and Sewerage Design
  • Foul Water Strategy
  • Civil Engineering design associated with projects
  • Able to write technical reports to accompany the drainage design and support planning applications
  • Client Management
  • Project Management
  • Proficient in AutoCAD
  • Proficient in Microdrainage

Successful Applicant

Ideal candidates will pose experience working on schemes within the UK Planning Sector and will be able to demonstrate knowledge in:

  • Surface Water and Foul Drainage Strategy.
  • Detailed Drainage and Sewerage Design
  • SuDS techniques
  • Experience in applying Sewers for Adoption/Sewerage Sector Guidance
  • AutoCAD, Microdrainage , Causeway
  • Aware of Current Policy, CIRIA C753, Sewerage Strategies, and S106 Agreements.
  • Producing Flood Risk Assessments as and when required


  • BEng / CEng  / MEng - Civil Engineering  / Environmental Engineering
  • Chartered ICE / CIWEM is advantageous
  • Working toward Chartership is beneficial
