Job Description

Purpose of Job:

To support the new product roadmap in the execution of new products by producing concepts, developing those ideas through to commercially viable products for investment and then preparing those products for volume manufacture.

Key responsibilities:

  • generate concept ideas following briefs from others;
  • produce visual content for review – sketches, models and renders.;
  • create prototypes for evaluation - functionally or aesthetically;
  • produce CAD models, manufacturing drawings and specifications;
  • select suitable design materials appreciating environmental factors;
  • packaging and layout of Electronic components;
  • conduct thermal simulations;
  • generate and maintain of Bills of Material throughout projects;
  • design components suitable for machining, casting, injection moulding and fabrication;
  • control all project data inclusive of dedicated CAD management software (EPDM);
  • conduct failure mode and risk analysis;
  • share responsibility for maintaining the available resources in the department e.g. 3D printer;
  • develop you understanding to competent levels in the associated technologies within the lighting industry e.g. LED’s, connectivity solutions and control products;
  • investigate opportunities for cost reduction in existing products proposing thorough and well considered analysis to back up your proposals;
  • attend industry events across engineering, design and the lighting sector;
  • manage your task across multiple projects simultaneously giving updates regularly on your workload and project status as well as any areas of concern;

Ideal person – you will have:

  • previous experience in Lighting or related industries or be from an Electro-mechanical design background;
  • in depth, experienced based knowledge and understanding of manufacturing technologies and processes - design for injection moulding, die casting, fabrication, machining;
  • experience in producing detailed manufacturing packs and design solutions, able to present and hand over to other team members or team disciplines including CAD models, detail drawings, assembly drawings & BOM's;
  • an understanding of designing for external environments IP ratings, environmental factors, robust products;
  • an inquisitive mind and be able to articulate ideas and proposals clearly through conceptual processes, analysis, and physical proof of concepts prototypes;
  • in depth understanding of mechanical design techniques including tolerance stack analysis;
  • high self-motivation and a demonstrated ability to get the job done;
  • excellent interpersonal skills.

  • able to guide selection and specify appropriate materials;
  • able to demonstrate how designs can be produced repeatably within volume manufacturing;
  • able to build, test and prove design concepts using models and prototypes – understand and predict the difference between SLA, FDM and SLS etc to ensure prototypes are appropriately processed;
  • comfortable operating at all level’s - CEO to Operatives;
  • able to contribute to the whole team, free with sharing knowledge and relish the challenge of a design problem

Qualifications/experience:

  • a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role;
  • 3D CAD experience with Solidworks or another top tier CAD package;
  • advantageous for candidates to hold a formal qualification i.e. HND/ HNC/ Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Engineering, Engineering based Product Design Degree’s.
