About Us

The Derwen Garden Centre is a family owned, and run, operation. We were founded in 1996 by the Joseph family, originally as an arm of the wholesale Dingle Nurseries, just up the road in Frochas. We are operated by a small team of dynamic, hard-working individuals, who enjoy and thrive working as part of a team. Good customer service, and an extensive range of beautiful plants, are at the core of our ethos.

We have recently installed our first EPoS system. We stock a huge range of plants from several suppliers, with many being grown by small, local businesses. This has made the implementation of the system quite a challenge. Simultaneously, we have been growing our wholesale website, while exploring the use of social media and Google as marketing tools. So, it seems that our traditional garden centre is modernising, and the IT element of our business is growing.

Emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic we are looking to take account for the business's environmental impact, aiming to reduce our carbon and waste footprints. We feel that gardening should have a positive impact on the planet, and hope that we can facilitate others to make it this way. Being an active part of the local community is something that will help us to achieve this aim. We hope to begin running workshops and talks addressing this.

The Job

The main responsibility of the successful candidate is the maintenance and utilisation of our new EPoS system. We want someone with meticulous organisational skills, someone who will ensure our stock database is accurate and up to date. The right candidate will resolve any issues that arise efficiently and effectively, while helping other staff members to use the system to its full potential. Deliveries must be checked and added daily, as well as management of existing stock records. The stock database must be integrated with our label making software, so regular updates and checks are to be performed to make sure the prices and stock lists are consistent with one another.

We hope to employ someone who will be able to work with all staff members to troubleshoot any issues that arise with any of our IT systems: printers, computers, internet, card machines, handheld devices. Someone innovative who would strive to streamline our operation by implementing new procedures and systems would be a huge asset to us.

Any further time spent could be on a variety of things. We have huge potential to build our wholesale website, so someone with and SEO background could excel here, content is needed, and this is another area where stock management is important. Management of our social media accounts is another aspect of our business that requires constant input.

The candidate must also be an ambassador for the garden centre, excellent customer service skills are always needed. In busy periods they may be expected to help on the tills or answer the phone. They should be flexible and work with a positive attitude towards all staff, customers, and the business in general.

The Derwen Garden Centre is committed to equal opportunities and we would like to encourage people from all backgrounds to apply. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people in BAME or LGBTQ+ communities.
